Mission Statements

Why write a mission statement?

Organizations must have a reason for being or they will cease to exist. A mission statement is the path you create to set the foundations of your endeavor. A mission statement can direct the nature of design and branding of your products or services.

All the elements of a business should work together to represent the focus and the direction of the company. So often businesses starting out, at the grass roots level, have only a single focus, making money and why not? If you can’t pay the bills you won’t have a business for long, but making the first few steps in the right direction will pay dividends in the long run.

Now think about how you want your company to be seen.

  • What are you selling?

  • What are the advantages that differentiate your products or services from your completion?

  • What are the benefits for your customers?

  • Where do you see the business going in the future?

These are all questions that should be addressed regularly. The result in going through the process of answering these scary questions might be a way of building a Mission Statement and then plotting a course of action. Now you can deal with the design elements. You can sit down with your designer, even if it is you doing the design work, and indicate to them clearly what it is you want. This might be packaging up a product, or creating a business card, or the ever crucial web page.
